Discovery Story

This tea was documented in the article “After Twenty Years — Entering a New World of Aged Tea,” which described how Master Chen Yurong discovered and evaluated this rare batch.

Chen Yurong (born 1952) is the former Director of the Fujian Provincial Tea Quality Inspection Station, a nationally recognized Senior Tea Appraiser, Senior Tea Processing Engineer, and member of the National Tea Standardization Technical Committee.

In 2015, during a research trip to Wuyi Mountain with her son Zhou Yi, Chen discovered this batch of aged rock teas that had been “hidden” for nearly twenty years — including Lao Cong Shuixian, Tie Luohan, Rou Gui, Shui Jin Gui, and a rare “misprinted” Zhengyan Shuixian.

After on-site evaluation, Chen concluded these teas had exceptional drinking value and collected them as treasured daily teas and gifts for friends.

Tasting Notes

Shui Jin Gui, together with Da Hong Pao, Tie Luohan, and Bai Ji Guan, is one of Wuyi’s Four Famous Rock Tea Bushes. Its name, meaning “Golden Water Turtle,” comes from its dense, glossy leaves that shimmer like a turtle’s shell.

The name Shui Jin Gui dates back to the late Qing Dynasty, when a lawsuit over the mother tree’s ownership in 1919–1920 made it famous across China.

This 1999 vintage Shui Jin Gui features tightly rolled dark-brown leaves with a slight frosty hue. The dry aroma blends caramel and aged notes. The liquor is bright orange-red, smooth and viscous, with aged and varietal aromas intertwined. The tea is powerful, enduring, with a strong sweet aftertaste (hui gan) and lingering rock rhyme (yan yun).

Shui Jin Gui has always been produced in small quantities, and well-preserved aged examples are exceedingly rare. Teas from the Jiuqu Factory represent the finest expression of Wuyi rock tea heritage.
